My Music at Work
"Music is like a sunrise for me
It's joyful like a trip in a time machine
Music is like a sunrise for me
It's like coming home "
-Michael Kiske
The quote is taken from a song called Music by legendary German heavy metal band Helloween. It sums up how I feel about music. It’s beautiful. It’s comforting. It’s life.
I fell in love with music at a very young age. I remember playing my mom’s 45 of ABBA’s Fernando over and over on a mini turntable. I loved the melody. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler was the next song I fell in love with. I was 6 years old.
A couple years later my neighbours introduced me to Motley Crue and my life changed (I am still obsessed with them). I became a full-blown heavy metal maniac! Iron Maiden, Ratt, Ozzy, Metallica and Judas Priest were all I wanted to listen to back in 1984!
As the years went on, I began buying cassettes and CDs, every hard rock/heavy metal music magazine I could get my hands on. (Why did I throw away all those RIP and Metal Edge magazines?!?!).
When I started teaching at Laurier Senior High School, I became friends with teachers and staff members that shared my love of music, and in 2007 we formed a band called Code 31, (back at LSHS, if a student was disruptive in class, 31 was entered in his/her report card. Get it?)
Anyway, 14 years later, we’re still together and when we get the chance we’ll be back to make as much noise as possible for all to hear.
To this day, I still consume as much music as possible, whether it’s buying magazines, CDS, records, or streaming. I love discovering new bands. My wish is that I could share this passion with as many people as possible.
